NSU Modern is one of UCLA's premiere hip-hop dance teams and is home to some of the university's most versatile and talented dancers. Its members are proud to represent the Nikkei Student Union, UCLA's only Japanese American student association. Comprised of multi-ethnic Bruins from various dance backgrounds, NSU Modern strives to perform a variety of dance styles.

 

For four years in a row, NSU Modern has had the honor of gracing the stage at several of UCLA’s exhibition showcases. NSU Modern also competes in various dance competitions including Vibe and Ultimate Brawl. The team took 2nd at Fusion 2010 and 3rd at Bridge 2012, making them the first UCLA team to ever place at two major hip-hop competitions. NSU Modern also won 1st place at 2014's Horizon Dance Competition hosted by the 626 Night Market. In the 2015-2016 competition season the team took 4th at both Fusion and Ultimate Brawl. From 2009-2012, NSU Modern won 1st for four years at Omega Sigma Tau's Battle Royale, an annual competition between all of the UCLA hip-hop dance teams and won 1st place once again at Battle Royale 2014, 2016, and 2023! NSU continues to compete at several competitions including Maxt Out, Prelude Las Vegas, and Prelude SoCal. The team also had the honor of performing in the Superbowl Halftime Show in 2021! Additionally, the team has been featured in print and on national television, and a number of its dancers are represented professionally by agencies in the dance industry.
